Velodyne HGS-15 And HGS-18 Servo-Controlled Subwoofers Are First To Be THX Ultra2-Certified

17-Sep-02

Velodyne Acoustics, Inc. has announced the servo-controlled HGS-15 and HGS-18 as the first and only such subwoofers with THXÆ Ultra2 certification. The HGS-15 and HGS-18 subwoofers incorporate a new version of Velodyneís patented Energy Recovery Switching Designô amplifier. This transformer-less, direct-line, power switching digital amplifier produces 1250 watts RMS, with a dynamic power rating of over 3000 watts. It was designed in-house by Velodyne founder David Hall. The driver design for the HGS-15 and HGS-18 subwoofers incorporates Velodyneís 3-inch Dual Tandem Voice Coil Design. David Hall, President and chief engineer noted, ìThe result is a driver that can generate less than half the distortion of conventional motor designs, and is capable of four times the heat dissipation.î Upgrades in driver designs include stiff, low-resonance, KevlarÆ-reinforced multi-layer cones; custom-designed, variable thickness EPDM surrounds; and new die-cast aluminum baskets. The HGS-15 and HGS-18 incorporate the latest generation of Velodyneís patented High Gain Servoô technology that uses Velodyneís proprietary sealed accelerometer to measure cone movements 3,500 times a second. They are both rated for bass extension from 18 Hz. In addition, the HGS-15 and HGS-18 include an integrated remote control system. The HGS THX Ultra2 subwoofers will be available in October. The suggested retail price of the HGS-15 is $2,799 and for the HGS-18 is $3,499. For more information, visit www.velodyne.com.
