Q
1) In an equalizer, Q is a number that specifies the width of the frequency band relative to its level. The higher the number the narrower the band or range of affected frequencies. 2) In loudspeakers, Q refers to the sharpness of the low frequency resonance and is inversely proportional to damping.
Q-Factor
A measure of the losses in a resonance system. The sharper the tuning curve, the higher the Q.
Q-Signal
Color video signal that modulates 3.58 MHz C signal in quadrature with I signal. Hues are green and magenta. Bandwidth is 0 to 0.5 MHz.
Quadraphonic
Four-channel sound.
Quadrupler
See Line Quadrupler.
Quantization
Conversion of continuous analog signal amplitudes into digital form (binary numbers). In PCM, the dynamic range of the system is determined by the number of possible values available to represent various levels of signal amplitude, which is in turn determined by the number of bits used to represent each sample. In the CD PCM format, the resolution of the quantization is 16 bits, which translates to each sample having any value between zero and 65,535. Quantization at 20 bits would produces a significantly wider value range for still greater resolution.
Quantization
Conversion of analog signal amplitudes into digital form (binary numbers).
