“Bit Troublesome”
Dear Gary:

In John Kotches’ review of the Pioneer Elite 56TXi, he discusses a “bit troublesome” i.Link connection. He states, “With SA-CD direct mode off, all SA-CD material will be played back as stereo-only, but you gain the ability to use MCACC and base management when not played back in direct mode.” Elsewhere in the review John mentions using an i.Link-equipped Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi DVD player, and I believe John may have missed a setting in the DVD player menu (Initial Settings-Options-SACD Playback––then select Multi-Ch Area) that does allow the 56TXi to play back multichannel tracks on surround SA-CDs with MCACC and base management engaged.

Also, for what ever reason, this receiver’s on-screen set up menu through component only works fine on my 56TXi. Go figure.

Contributing Editor John Kotches Comments:

I’m glad to see that our subscribers read with great care what we write, because this is obviously one of the “little details” deep within the review!

There was some bad wording on my part, as I’m aware of “2ch-area vs Mch Area” settings on the player. Even Gary’s usually magical editing skills can’t fix everything. What I was trying to convey is that I couldn’t find a combination that allows for SA-CD via i.Link to engage Bass Management and MCACC for surround. I don’t have either the Pioneer 56TXi or the 59AVi around anymore, so I can’t double check this. Pioneer did see an advance copy and had the opportunity to fact check this review to make sure that there were no technical errors. They didn’t point out any factual issues with the review.

The OSD via component was an error on my end. The component input I had the 56TXi connected to accepts 480p and 1080i. It won’t sync to 480i, which is what the 56TXi was connected to for OSD. This is my mistake.

Although we sometimes think we are; reviewers aren't omnipotent! Thanks for reading Widescreen Review and for taking interest in our work!
