Sonic Whole Overhead Sound
Dear Gary:

No one seems to know what happened to “Sonic Whole Overhead Sound.” I contacted Dolby Labs, Soundelux, and SmartDevices (Norm Schneider replied, “The best source...would be from Gary Reber of Widescreen Review magazine. They are current on all the formats”). Was anything released after We Were Soldiers?

Editor-In-Chief and Publisher Gary Reber Comments:

We Were Soldiers was an experiment. Nothing since has been actually encoded with a height channel, though the Surround EX Matrix technology certainly can work for this. I continue to be an advocate for a height channel and have proposed one as part of the eight-channel discrete linear PCM format to be provided in both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD formats. The “eighth” discrete channel can be frequency divided to carry both an LFE .1 channel and a height channel. And both DTS-HD and Dolby Digital Plus can support a height channel so configured.
