5-Aug-03

As the choices of audio and video entertainment systems continue to grow, creating the right ""canvas"" on which to view the works of art coming from these systems becomes more important. To meet this challenge, Joe Kane Productions and DVD International have introduced ""Digital Video Essentials"" (DVE), the next generation in reference video calibration software for home theatre enthusiasts. This is a step-by-step program of what is needed to create the definitive home theatre experience. Microsoft and Samsung Electronics America joined Joe Kane Productions and DVD International at the VSDA Convention, as each company presented, respectively, Windows MediaÆ 9 Series and the new SP-H700A HD2 DLPô front projector. ""Windows Media 9 Series enables new high-definition video and complete surround sound audio experiences for the home theatre with astonishing compression efficiency,"" said Jonathan Usher, Director, Windows Digital Media Division, Microsoft Corp. ""Joe Kane's use of Windows Media for 'Digital Video Essentials' is a great testament to the unmatched quality of these codecs for use in delivering high-definition home theatre experiences today."" ""Samsung's entry in the front-projector business is an extension of our commitment to the DLP technology,"" said Steve G. Panosian, Senior Marketing Manager, Samsung's Visual Display Group. ""We believe that our design approach built around the DLP technology offers the consumer best-of-class performance for high-quality home theatre solutions. Combining Samsung's microdisplay know-how and Joe Kane's principles for achieving video perfection will help deliver a product that adds to the popularity and appeal of Samsung DLP TV products."" ""Our initial goal for DVE was to create a program that would help consumers with the transition from standard-definition TV to high-definition,"" said Joe Kane, President, Joe Kane Productions. ""It grew to be a lot more as we illustrated points that are common to both systems. The program was produced to the highest potential of the 1080-line progressive high-definition format and will likely become reference source material for judging high-definition's capability."" Attendees learned about the quality capability of Windows Media 9 HD-DVD and the current D-Theaterô HD distribution format on a high-quality display system designed to industry specifications for high-definition video. They also saw the difference between true HD and the best capability currently offered by standard-definition DVD. Produced in the 1080-line progressive, 24-frame high-definition format, DVE: - Will be available on DVD from a high-quality conversion of the master program to 480p/24 for NTSC and 576p/25 for PAL (also in DVD-ROM mode for Windows Media 9 Series, with multichannel audio) - Is being used to develop ""True Progressive Mastering"" used in MPEG encoding for DVDs in future generations of that product - Offers test materials in the 1.78 widescreen and 1.33 format - Provides basic, intermediate, and advanced levels of video calibration instructions - Provides red, green, and blue color filters for setting up color and judging the quality of video decoders - Provides DolbyÆ Digital 2.0 Surround, Dolby Digital Surround EXô, and DTS-ESÆ multichannel audio test signals - Has more than 50 new video test patterns Windows Media 9 Series represents the most comprehensive digital media platform ever delivered, featuring groundbreaking audio and video codecs. The Windows Media codecs offer support for high-definition video and up to 7.1 surround sound audio. The VSDA demonstration compared D-Theater with Windows Media 9 Series. The Samsung SP-H700A HD2 DLP projector has been designed as the most innovative, high-quality image system in its price range. The projector, designed with the assistance of Joe Kane, accurately reproduces the color fidelity specified for high-definition in specifications by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers for program production.
