Today at Consumer Electronics Show booth 21240 in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, Polk Audio announced their first in-wall subwoofer, the CSW155. The new model joins Polk’s CSW100 and CSW200 in-floor/ceiling subwoofer models introduced in 2005. The CSW155 in-wall model features a 10-inch long-throw, shallow basket woofer mounted in a slot-vented enclosure. The woofer cone is a reinforced flat diaphragm driven by a powerful Neodymium magnet. The robust enclosure is fabricated of MDF wood and a 1/8" aluminum panel on the rear of the enclosure for resonance-free high performance. At 60" L x 13.5" W x 3.5" D, the CSW155 easily fits in standard stud walls without any protrusion into the room. Bass frequencies are launched into the room through a supplied 16" x 18" vent. Once installed the CSW88 will look like an air return vent, not a subwoofer. To ease installation the CSW155 is supplied with all mounting hardware and adhesive damping strips that eliminate buzzes and rattles. “Several in-wall ‘woofers’ have been introduced in the past couple of years but few of them could legitimately claim to be sub-woofers” said Polk Product Line manager Al Baron. “Most of them do not go low enough or play loud enough to qualify by our criteria as true sub-woofers. It is a testament to our engineering effort that the CSW155 measures significantly better than several 12-inch 200 Watt free-standing powered subwoofers in CEA2010 ‘Loud & Low’ tests.” The CSW155 as well as the CSW100 and CSW200 in-floor/ceiling subwoofers are powered by an external Class D amplifier, the SWA500. Producing 500 Watts Continuous into 4 Ohms, the SWA500 easily powers up to two woofers to rafter shaking levels. The amplifier features a Digital Signal Processor that adjusts the amplifier's response to maximize the built-in subwoofers' performance. The CSW155 will ship with a SPEX circuit card that is installed into the SWA500 amplifier to optimize its performance characteristics (EQ, power output, etc.) for the CSW155. A full array of features include: front panel Level and Variable Low-Pass Filter controls, Overload Protection circuitry, low-level and high-level Inputs, 2 sets of outputs (for daisy-chain connection to additional amplifiers), Phase Switch and Auto On/Off. The CSW155 will ship to Custom Installation specialist retailers in April 2007 at an MSRP of $800. The companion SWA500 amplifier’s MSRP is $700.
