WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The Rock tells the non-stop action adventure about a successful Alcatraz escapee (Sean Connery), forced to team up with an FBI chemical weapons specialist (Nicholas Cage) and stop a corrupt general (Ed Harris) before he bombs San Francisco with deadly poison gas.

LaserDisc Picture:
The THX® quality assured picture is framed at 2.32:1 and exhibits excellent color fidelity with rich and warm colors that are vividly rendered. Fleshtones are accurate and blacks are deep and solid. Contrast and shadow detail are superb and the images are always sharp and detailed. Slight noise appears in the darker scenes but there are no artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack versions for PCM matrix and Dolby® Digital are super. Bass response is extremely deep and powerful throughout and is a brutal exercise in system low frequency performance making this an exciting low frequency effects soundtrack. Frequencies are below 25Hz at each channel and at high SPL for prolonged durations. Dialogue sounds mostly natural except for the occasional over-produced ADR usage. The music score is well recorded with a wide and deep soundstage that is slightly more image precise in the discrete version. While the matrix version often has a more expansive enveloping character, the 5.1 discrete delivers a phenomenal holosonic experience, when fully engaged, that is awesome in spatial delineation, especially in the interiors of Alcatraz, with both aggressive and subtle perspective. This is a powerfully engaging and exciting soundtrack that is sure to please.
