WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The Apostle is a labor of love for Robert Duvall who triumphs in the title role in the film he also wrote, produced and directed. In the orbit of evangelical ministers, Sonny Dewey (Duvall) may be a star. But while he appears in command of the countless souls he preaches to, he is not always in command of his own. Threatened with the simultaneous loss of both his family and church, Sonny is driven to commit a crime of passion, seriously injuring the young preacher whom his wife (Farrah Fawcett) has fallen in love with. After fleeing everything he has worked to achieve, he changes his name to E. F., dubs himself “The Apostle” and sets about rehabilitating a small abandoned church—in this way, he is able to rehabilitate himself.
