WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Lee (who lost his life during filming) plays Eric Draven, a young rock guitarist who, along with his fiancée, is brutally killed by a ruthless gang of criminals. Exactly one year after their murders, Eric returns from the grave as a “messenger of death”—led by a hypnotic crow—to seek revenge on the evil crimelord (Michael Wincott) and his mercenaries.

LaserDisc Picture:
The film-to-tape transfer and disc replication was overseen and certified under the auspices of the THX® Laser Disc Program. The picture has been matted at the proper 1.85:1 theatrical aspect ratio contrary to the notation on the cover of a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The picture’s look is dark due to dim interiors and seedy urban street locations and thus the colors are subdued to render the desired mood and atmosphere. The picture has the slightest grain and noise throughout, but is most apparent in the darkest night and interior scenes. Shadow detail is excellent and the interior lighting is extremely natural with good overall picture detail, deep blacks and natural fleshtones.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack has been matrix-encoded from the original 18-track Dolby SR discrete print master stems. It is extremely well crafted and conveys an intense spatial surround presence with deep bass extension down to 25 Hz! It features a powerful rock score, which when combined with the sound effects creates an enveloping soundscape, a tribute to the sound design’s near perfect integration of dialogue, music and effects.
