Story Synopsis

Raintree County is the screen adaptation by director Millard Kaufman of Ross Lockridge, Jr.’s prize-winning novel. It’s a glossy civil war romance in the epic tradition of Hollywood, and stars Best Actress Academy Award® nominee Elizabeth Taylor as Susanna Drake, a troubled Southern belle, who is tormented by the memory of her mother destroying their family plantation, in full vengeance for her father’s affair with a servant girl, and by an obsessive belief that she herself may be the illegitimate daughter of her father’s infidelity. Equally troubled is Johnny Shawnessy (Montgomery Clift) who leaves his childhood love to marry Susanna. Raintree Country continues to escalate with loads of hearty tragedy and romance as Johnny and Susanna get swept up in their passion for each other amidst the tensions and chaos of their lives and the events surrounding the Civil War.
