WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the novel “The Killer Angels” by Michael Shaara, Gettysburg is the monumental cinematic achievement that tells an epic story about the events, battles and personal struggles on both sides of the Civil War. It features incredibly vivid Civil War battle scenes and a powerful blow-by-blow reenactment of the most crucial event in American history in which 50,000 men lost their lives on July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg. The film chronicalizes the battle’s tactical maneuvers in detail and through the use of dialog, the philosophies and psychology of the era are explored. Outstanding performances are featured by Tom Berenger, Jeff Daniels, Sam Elliott and Martin Sheen in this remarkably real masterpiece of filmmaking.

LaserDisc Picture:
This LaserDisc version is cropped to 1.75:1. The picture exhibits excellent contrast and a very natural cinematic appearance. There is, however, a slight green cast in night scenes as well as a filtered haze effect and some slight artifacts apparent in some scenes. Color fidelity is excellent and fleshtones are very naturally rendered. Overall, this is a very realistic looking film whose visual style is perfect for the authenticity of the events graphically depicted.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is wonderful with aggressive surrounds and tremendous bass extension which can be heard on cannon shots during the various battle engagements. The Foley work is exceptional and convincingly recreates man-to-man combat. Randy Edelman’s music score is simply magnificent.
