WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Richard Attenborough’s Ghandi is a remarkable achievement and winner of nine Academy Awards®. The life of an extraordinary man, Mohandas K. Gandhi, is explored in this epic film which spans 55 years of his life beginning with his career as a young defiant lawyer who uses nonviolent resistance to protest South Africa’s racial laws. Eventually, Gandhi becomes India’s martyred Mahatma who frees her from two centuries of British colonialism. Gandhi’s good spirit and dedication triumphs in a world of cruelty and injustice giving great hope to many. With breathtaking cinematography and an outstanding cast including Candice Bergen, Martin Sheen, John Gielgud and award winning Ben Kingsley as the Mahatma, Gandhi proves a timeless motion picture classic.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture has been recomposed to 2.25:1. The image is marred by slight grain throughout and an overall low contrast, washed-out appearance. Interior scenes are overly bright and fleshtones have an unnatural reddish tint. While the picture lacks the richness of color of the better films, some scenes look very good.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack has centralized dialogue and a wonderful stereophonic music score.
