WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Toys is an odd combination of drama, comedy, and musical with a touch of horror. Writer/producer/director Barry Levinson has created a masterpiece of screen design full of stunning visual delights and colorful sets. Production designer Ferdinando Scarfiotti and a team of visionary artists have produced a bold experiment in art direction. The action takes place at the Zevo toy factory when the founder, Kenneth Zevo (Donald O’Conner) dies and wills control of the company to his brother Leland (Michael Gambon), a rigid, psychotic army general. The story is about the ensuing conflict between the general and the founder’s two children, Leslie (Robin Williams) and Alsatia (Joan Cusack). Along with the remarkable and colorful visual elements there are some great gags and the toys are absolutely fabulous!

LaserDisc Picture:
Without proper monitor setup the 1.85:1 transfer is oversaturated, too red, and skin tones are inconsistent. With proper calibration the colors are eye-popping.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
Sound is sometimes bright and harsh but effects sound very good and the music is great.
