WSR Narrative Review |

Story Synopsis:
Lost In Yonkers is director Martha Coolidge’s wonderful film adaptation of the Neil Simon play. based upon the stage play by Ivan Menchell, a heartwarming and somber yet humorous affair. Set in 1942, the story is about two young brothers who are sent to live with their domineering, steel-hearted grandmother (Irene Worth) after their mother’s death. Their Aunt Bella (Mercedes Ruehl) who still lives at home and works in Grandma’s downstairs candy store is her 35-year-old daughter with the mind of a child. Uncle Louie (Richard Dreyfuss) is a small-time gangster who has, after years of absence, come home to hide out. What ensues is a comedy set amongst the pain that lurks in this family closet.
LaserDisc Picture:
The matted aspect ratio is 1.85:1. The transfer is generally excellent with natural flesh tones and color balance throughout. Contrast and shadow detail is also excellent.
LaserDisc Soundtrack:
This is a wonderful soundtrack and a lovely music score recorded with superb depth and dimension. The subtle surround ambience nicely supports the drama and the dialogue is exceptionally natural sounding.
