While passengers onboard the "Poseidon" were busy toasting in the New Year, a humongous rogue wave was on its way to join in on the festivities. After the giant swell crashed its way into the ship, as in 1972's The Poseidon Adventure (both of which are based on the novel by Paul Gallico), death and destruction was everywhere, as the victims scrambled to find their way to safety through the inverted ship. And you get some those up-front ads.
The VC-1-encoded 2.38:1 HD DVD delivers a great-looking image, with very well-resolved details, inky blacks, and well-balanced contrast. Some source element artifacts and flecks of dirt can be seen from time to time, and the CGI doesn't have the same level of realism as the actual sets. There are times when the live action even looks soft. (Danny Richelieu)
The Dolby® Digital Plus and lossless Dolby TrueHD encodings use the same mix as the DVD, with the surround and LFE channels underutilized for much of the presentation. There are scenes, however, that are explosively engaging. The TrueHD encoding provides improved fidelity, with a smoother, more natural response. (Danny Richelieu)
