Subscribe FreeWinner of four Academy Awards® in 1976, "Network" is Sidney Lumet's wickedly funny satire of the TV news media. When Howard Beale (Finch, posthumous Best Actor Oscar®-winner)—the longtime news anchor for the fourth-place network UBS-TV—is fired, he suffers a violent breakdown on the air. Ironically, the mishap boosts the network's ratings, and he is rehired as the "mad prophet of the airwaves." Thus, Howard becomes a pawn for a ruthless programmer (Dunaway, in an outstanding award-winning performance) and a shark-like vice president (Duvall), who manically exploits his insanity. Network is even more compelling than when it was first released because it seems barely ahead of news media today.
