The 2.39:1 1080p picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed digitally and sourced from a 4K Digital Intermediate. The animated picture is incredibly fantastic. The layout settings and animation is state-of-the-art with amazing textural shadings, not the line drawings that are often presented. The settings and environments are imaginative. The animation is wonderfully creative. The lustrous color palette exhibits beautifully saturated hues that are warm and rich with strong primaries and a natural sense of density. At time, colors pop. Each animal species is depicted in textural detail Contrast is superb. Black levels are deep and solid. Animated shadows are casted with excellent shading. White levels are effectively illuminated to create environments. Resolution is superb with wonderful detail exhibited in the numerous animal creatures. The variety of animals is wonderful, all exhibiting a convincing sense of volume and scale, particularly the larger variety. The stellar detail is especially revealing in the textural context of the animals. Close-ups are wonderfully intricate in detail. This is another reference-quality animated 1080 presentation from Disney that will trill all ages. (Gary Reber)
The DTS-HD Master Audio™ 7.1-channel soundtrack is wonderful. Atmospherics and sound effects are creatively executed. Sound effects are active throughout to excite the action with perfect bass support, including an active.1 LFE channel throughout. There is constant engagement of the side and rear surround channels with sound effects and other ambient environmental sounds conveying excellent directionality and panning. Foley sound effects are precise. Animal movements are nicely accentuated with footfalls that shake from low-frequency impact by the larger types and nuanced sonics for the others. Michael Giacchino's orchestral score is dynamic sounding with distinct imaging across the wide soundstage with an aggressive extension to the four surrounds. As a side note, drummer Bernie Dresel, who I have produced four recording releases with, is a featured Instrumentalist. ADR dialogue is remarkably well integrated and intelligible, and gives life to each animal character. The portrayal of voicing to match the animal characters is excellent, This is a superb hollosonic® soundtrack that brings the story to life, with a fun mixture of voicing that will put a smile on every member of the family.
