In "Frontier Crucible," a former soldier with a tragic past is thrown into an uneasy alliance with three outlaws, a beautiful woman, and her injured husband, to battle the harsh elements and hostiles in a desperate bid for survival in the Arizona of the 1870s. (Gary Reber)

Special features include a making-of featurette (HD 21:00).

The 2.39:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 4K Ultra HD HDR10 picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed digitally and sourced from a 4K Digital Intermediate. The setting is the Arizona territory and the home of the Apache. The magnificent rocky terrain of reddish landscapes dotted with desert vegetation are the backdrop. The color palette exhibits strongly saturated hues that are vivid. Hue shadings are nuanced, The natural colors in the landscape are beautiful. The imagery throughout is sharp and clear. Flesh tones appear natural. HDR contrast is excellent. Blacks are deep and natural. Shadow delineation is realistic. A campfire during the night is a highlight. White levels appear brightly illuminated. Resolution is superb with fine detail exhibited throughout. Facial feature are finely resolved, especially during closeups. Facial attributes, such as beards, are nicely resolved. Clothing fabrics are apparent. Objects reveal texture. This is a beautiful setting for a western with sharp imagery. (Gary Reber)

The Dolby Atmos/Dolby TrueHD 7.1-channel soundtrack delivers subtle atmospherics, realistic sound effects and a Western music score. The atmospherics provide background support for the setting. Sound effects, such as powerful gunfire and the sound of a mule-driven wagon, are realistic. Foley sound effects enhance the realism of character movements. The music is spread wide with an aggressive extension to the surrounds. Surround energy is constant with directional attributes. Dialogue, while intelligible, is completely ADR produced and sounds unnaturally forward and wanting in spatial integration.

The Immersive Sound element is strictly limited to an extension of the Western music to the height layer. But the music, while wonderfully dimensional, is sporadic, and without treatment for the other sound elements the music alone is not enough to fully enhance sound field dimensionality.

This is a minimized holosonic® soundtrack that, with the exception of the dialogue, is well produced. (Gary Reber)
