In "Beast Of War," when their boat is sunk while crossing the Timor Sea during World War II, a young troop of Australian soldiers must find a way to survive the harsh seas on a quickly shrinking life raft. Hundreds of miles from anywhere, they must confront interpersonal conflicts, enemy attacks, and the advances of one very large, very hungry great white shark. (Gary Reber)

The 2.39:1:1 1080p picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed digitally and sourced from a 2K master Digital Intermediate format. The setting initially is in a training camp with a jungle backdrop, followed by a nightmare on the Timor Sea in which a small group of soldiers are challenged for survival on a floating platform surrounded by sea. The picture is rather dark, especially during the sea sequences in foggy conditions with diffused sunlight or night. The production design is limited in color treatment with flesh tones the main color and orange sky backdrop, or the fire glow of a fighter airplane. Otherwise, hues are grayest and blackish. Contrast is generally realistic with black levels and shadow levels dominant. Resolution can be revealing of fine detail but generally the imagery tends to be a bit soft. Closeups are frequent and fair better. Overall, this is a satisfying visual experience based on true events. (Gary Reber)
The DTS-HD master Audio 5.1-channel soundtrack tends to be hauntingly dynamic sounding with a brooding orchestra/coral score that occupies a wide and deep soundstage with aggressive extension to the surrounds. Atmospherics reflect the calming sea. Sound effects are gunfire, grenade explosions, fighter aircraft, and water effects. Foley sound effects are precise. Deep bass serves dramatic effect, often with heighten .1 LFE boost. The shark attacks are fright sounding. Surround energy is aggressive and effective. This is an effective holosonic® soundtrack that delivers tension. (Gary Reber)
