The 2.39:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 Ultra HD Dolby Vision/HDR10 picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed on Eastman Kodak 35 mm film using the Moviecam Compact camera system and sourced from a 4K master Digital Intermediate format derived from a restoration from the original camera negatives by Arrow Films. The grain structure is smooth and virtually invisible. The production design is imaginative with different worlds depicted –– one the normal, real world and the other a hellish nightmare. Spawn transcends from one to the other imploding with violence. Exciting visual special effects are prominent throughout and depicted in hellish colorful characters. Visually, the picture often is extremely busy. The color palette is nicely saturated and exhibits warm and rich hues with a nicely nuanced color gamut that reveals texture. Flesh tones amongst real humans appear natural, The non-humans are distinctive in facial appearance and deformities.. HDR contrast is excellent. Black levels are deep. Dark shadows are deep and revealing with excellent textural definition. White levels appear realistic with dramatic lighting effects and intensely bright explosions. Resolution is vividly detailed. Facial features reveal skin pores, lines makeup and beards. Creature features are incredibly detailed. Costumes are texturally detailed. Sets, exteriors and interiors are sharp and clear, This is an exciting and spectacular visual experience that will thrill fans of this fantasy horrific classic. (Gary Reber)

The DTS=HD Master Audio 5.1-channel soundtrack is dynamic sounding and exceptionally energized with sound effects that ignite the sound field in all directions. Sound effects are loudly intense and explosive, and supported with whiplash transient speed. Soundstage imaging is excellent. Atmospherics sound realistic though mostly overshadowed by the intense sound effects. Bass extension is deep and extends to powerful low frequencies in the .1 LFE channel. The orchestra/synthesizer/choral score occupies a wide soundstage that blends in with the sound effects and aggressively extends to the surrounds with directional energy. At the height of the sound effects and music the entire sound field is loudly enveloping. Surround action is almost always intensely energized with directional effects. Dialogue is often ADR produced, especially with the non-human characters but with generally good integration, while punching through the loud sound effects. This is an extremely charged holosonic® soundtrack that delivers intense SPL levels in all channels for an exciting sonic experience. (Gary Reber)
