The 2.35:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 Ultra HD Dolby Vision/HDR10 picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed on Kodak film stock in Super 35 using the Arricam LT, Arricam S, Arriflex 435 ES, Arriflex 535B and Arriflex 235 camera systems and sourced from a director approved 4K master Digital Intermediate format sourced from the original film negative. Film grain is virtually invisible. The color palette exhibits warm and rich saturated hues the at times pop, Reds, such as related to the bloody zombie mayhem, are deep. Facial features and flesh tones appear realistic. HDR contrast is excellent. Blacks are deep and solid. Shadows are revealing. White levels appear natural and at time are brilliant. Resolution is superb with fine detail exhibited throughout. In particular, facial features such as Shaun's manicured facial hair, Ed's unkempt stubble, and Liz and Diane's typically perfectly applied make-up are sharp, and blood spatter exhibits clarity. The undead skin tones and effects make-up are revealing of fine detail. Indoor environments and furnishings are finely textured. Environmental features such as grass, leaves, and gravel are clearly delineated as well as signage and newspapers. Throughout the imagery is sharp and clear. This is the best the film has ever looked with terrific picture quality that will thrill fans. (Gary Reber)
The repurposed Dolby Atmos/Dolby TrueHD 7.1-channel soundtrack is dynamic sounding with a platitude of atmospherics and sound effects that are directional. Sound effects are enhanced with bass effects and there is an overall substantial bass presence in support of both music and effects. The music has a strong low frequency foundation and gunshots, car crashes, and heavy doors are supported with .1 LFE impact. Surrounds are occasionally engaged to provide dimension to the environments and are consistently used to provide soundfield dimension and depth to the score. Dialogue is intelligible throughout with some directional cues and generally with good spatial integration.
The Immersive Sound element is use to extend the music to the height layer, as well as the occasional sound effect. As such, the soundfield is enhanced with dimension.
This is wonderfully engaging and entertaining holosonic® soundtrack that delivers fun excitement. (Gary Reber)
