At 11:30pm on October 11, 1975, a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television –– and culture –– forever. "Saturday Night" is based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live. Full of humor, chaos, and the magic of a revolution that almost wasn’t, we count down the minutes in real time until we hear those famous words... (Gary Reber)

The 1.85:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 Ultra HD Dolby Vision/HDR10 picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed on Kodak 200T 35 mm film stock in Super 16 mm using the Arriflex 416 camera system and sourced from a 4K master Digital Intermediate. Film grain is virtually absent. The production design is set on a live TV set backstage. The production involves lots of people involved in putting the show on. Flesh tones and complexions appear natural. Color fidelity exhibits realistic hues that are effectively saturated and at times pop. Contrast is excellent and in character with the set staging and lighting. Blacks are solid and shadows reveal depth. White levels appear natural. Resolution is revealing of detail throughout in facial features, hair and beards, and in textural detail of the interiors of the studio environs. This is a filmic and compelling portrayal of the challenges of producing a TV show on-air live. (Gary Reber)
The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1-channel soundtrack is dialogue focused and quite busy in rapid lines and gibbered. Intelligibility is generally good but at times requires concentration as the words are raddled off. Spatial integration is good. The accompanying dominant sound element is a music score that is percussion centric and very rhythmic with an extremely wide and directional soundstage and surround presence. At times the "Billy Preston" band jumps with an aggressive surround presence. The music sounds dynamic with excellent fidelity. Atmospherics, which sound realistic, also fill the production design. Sound effects relate to door closings, lighting rigs crashing, and other noises backstage caused by the bustle of lots of people involved in putting on the show. Foley sound effects are prominent as well. Overall, this is a realistic holosonic® presentation of behind-the-scenes live television production. (Gary Reber)
