In "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," after an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), Lydia's (Winona Ryder) life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice's name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem. The 1.85:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 Ultra HD Dolby Vision/HDR10 picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed digitally in anamorphic Ultra Panavision 70 using the Sony CineAlta Venice 2 camera system and sourced from a 4K master Digital Intermediate format. The picture is absolutely gorgeous with flawless quality. The production design is quite creative and imaginative with settings between the real world and the afterlife. The color palette exhibits superbly saturated rich and warm hues. Primaries are strong. Delia's red hair pops. The wide color gamut displays a wide range of nuanced colors. Other than the stylized scenes, the real world scenes appear perfectly natural. The black and white segments exhibit excellent gray scale definition. HDR contrast is excellent, Blacks are solid black and deep yet revealing. Shadows exhibit good depth and shading, White levels are bright and perfectly illuminated. Resolution is superb throughout. Fine detail is evident in facial features such as skin pores, lines, makeup, character appearance and hair. Beetlejuice and his associates are fabulous looking. Costume fabrics are finely textured. Set designs and objects exhibit fine texture. This is a very beautifully exhibited picture that is visually compelling throughout. (Gary Reber)
The Dolby Atmos/Dolby TrueHD 7.1-channel soundtrack is dynamic sounding and propelled by a wonderful Danny Elfman orchestral/choral score. The music perfectly images across and deep within the soundstage. Instrumental and choral definition and localization is excellent. The Soul Train sequences are musically lively. Atmospherics are dimensional. Sound effects are numerous and often supported with enhanced deep bass extension with strong deep .1 LFE energy. Foley sound effects are perfectly synced with picture. Surround envelopment is strong and dimensional. Dialogue is intelligible with generally good spatial integration.
The Immersive Sound element is comprised of an extension of the music with dimensional localization as well as sporadic atmospherics and sound effects such as powerful thunder and lightening, subtle winds, very brief loud dialogue, door breaking, din, breaking glass and other minor sonics. With the music the prime element in the height layer and its frequency of use, this is an effective spherical dimensional enhancement.
This is a very creative and most fun holosonic® spherical surround soundtrack with superb dynamics and fidelity that is a wonderful system showcase, (Gary Reber)
