    "MaXXXine" is the murderous finale of Ti West’s X trilogy (X, Pearl). In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past. (Gary Reber)

    Special features include four featurettes: "The Belly Of The Beast" (HD 09:39), "XXX Marks The Spot" (HD 11:21), "Hollywood Is A Killer" (HD 08:14) and "Q&A With Writer-Director Ti West" (HD 25;23); teaser trailer, theatrical trailer and a digital copy.

    The 2.39:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 4K Ultra HD Dolby Vision/HDR10 picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed digitally using the Red Komodo and Sony CineAlta Venice 2 camera systems and sourced from a 4K Digital Intermediate. The stylistic picture exhibits a saturated color palette that presents contrasty imagery with a fine filtered effect in the outdoor daylight street scenes. The color gamut is wide but natural. Flesh tones are perfectly accurate. HDR contrast is excellent with deep, natural black levels, shadow definition and natural white levels, which at times are intensely bright. Resolution exhibits fine detail in setting environments. Facial features are focused and detailed, Clothing fabrics are discernible. Objects and building and other environmental objects appear realistic and textured. This is a good looking picture that delivers an intense stylish visual buildup. (Gary Reber)

    The Dolby Atmos/Dolby TrueHD 7.1-channel soundtrack is dynamic sounding with excellent fidelity. Atmospherics and sound effects sound realistic. Sound effects are supported with deep bass .1 LFE support. Foley sound effects are perfectly synced and enhance the realism. The orchestral/choral rock music score exhibits a wide and deep soundstage with aggressive extension to the surrounds for an enveloping soundfield experience. The sound elements intensify as the story develops with increasingly gory killings. Dialogue sounds intelligible with generally good spatial integration.

    The Immersive Sound element is comprised of an extension of the music to the height layer as well as minor atmospheric din. Far more could have been achieved to enhance the spherical dimensionality of the soundfield.

    This is a well crafted holosonic® spherical surround soundtrack that is nicely produced. (Gary Reber)
