The 2.39:1 1080p AVC picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed on Kodak Vision3 film stock using the Arri Alexa Mini LF and Arricam LT camera systems and sourced from a 4K Digital Intermediate. Segments of flash backs are framed at 1.33:1. Film grain is so smooth it is virtually invisible. The overall production design is dark, with few bright sequences. Color fidelity is warm and naturally hued, though the richness of color is likely to be more vibrant on the 4K ultra HD release. Here, they instead appear desaturated in intensity. Flesh tones appear natural and reveal complexion tones. Contrast is crushed due to the general darkest of the production design. Blacks are crushed and shadow delineation is veiled. White levels are also dark. Resoultion is generally decent in the brighter scenes but the imagery is decidedly soft during the darker scenes. This is a stylistic spooky thriller that packs edgy mystery and horrific outcomes. (Gary Reber)
The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1-channel soundtrack is spookily atmospherics with an orchestral/choral score that creates a horrific mood during numerous scenes. There also are instances of rock music. The music is spread wide and deep across the soundstage with aggressive surround envelopment. Fidelity is good and the sound is dynamic with deep bass extension. At times, the SPL is intense. Sound effects are at times punctuated with bass, such as shotgun fire, and otherwise sound realistic. Dialogue is intelligible with generally good spatial integration. This is a creepy holosonic® soundtrack wrapped in suspense and horrific terror. The soundtrack is well-crafted and effectively scary. (Gary Reber)
