The 2.39:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 4K Ultra HD Dolby Vision/HDR10 picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed digitally in anamorphic Panavision® using the Arri Alexa 65, Red V-Raptor and Komodo camera systems and sourced from a 4K Digital Intermediate. Colin Gibson's production design is spectacular! Simon Doggan's cinematography is gorgeous and set in mostly desert environments. The color palette is warm and rich with beautifully saturated hues. Primaries are strong and hue shadings are finely nuanced. Beige and reddish sands, wardrobe browns, white skin makeup, orange fiery explosions, grays and blue skies are prominent along with every imaginable hue shading. Flesh tones are natural, at least most of the time. HDR contrast is terrific with a wide spectrum of deep blacks, revealing shadows and natural whites. Resolution is superb throughout exhibiting impressive clarity and sharpness. Facial features are finely resolved with detail revealed in skin pores, lines, beards, beard stubble, and makeup. The myriad of costumes are complexly detailed. Structures and objects are impressively delineated. This is a fantastic visual experience with exceptional attention to complex detail. Home theatre enthusiasts will relish the reference quality. (Gary Reber)
The Dolby Atmos/Dolby TrueHD 7.1-channel soundtrack is fantastically dynamic and constantly erupting in spectacular atmospherics and sound effects that create incredible realism in this wasteland war saga. The SPL level is often intense, including that of bass extension. Sound effects dominant with all manner of gunfire, intense road rage, motorcycle rumbles, engine revs, and much more, all enhanced with powerfully deep bass that extends to sub-25 Hz with intensity. The soundfield is often active with panned sound effects. Foley sound effects provide perfect sync with picture. Tom Holkkenborg's orchestral/choral score is exceptionally powerful and fully envelops the soundfield with an extremely wide domination. The dynamics are incredible. Strong drum and brass segments ignite the soundfield with excellent stereo imagining between each channel vector. Surround envelopment is aggressively enveloping with excellent directionality. Dialogue throughout and narration is intelligible and mostly ADR produced with satisfying integration.
The Immersive Sound element is comprised of an aggressive extension of the orchestral/choral music, environmental atmospherics and sound effects, even subtle Foley sound effects. The sound design incorporates a virtually constant palette of sonics in the height layer, often at intense SPL. This significantly enhances the spherical dimensionality of the soundtrack. Other filmmakers should follow the example.
This is a truly spectacular holosonic® spherical surround soundtrack that is extremely dynamic and loud with a bass foundation and attention to sonic nuances that few soundtracks ever achieve. This is a superior home theatre presentation that requires a sound system capable of realizing its full potential. (Gary Reber)
