The 1.85:1 1080p AVC picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed digitally using the Arri Signature Primes and Sony CineAlta Venice 2 camera systems and sourced from a 2K Digital Intermediate. The picture, for the most part, is set in dark or shadowy environments, which, at times, can turn to monochrome. Unfortunately shadow delineation is not optimized but then this could be by design and intended. The settings do evoke pending terror and horror. Spot lighting is effective in enhancing this sense. The color palette is seriously tapped down and bright colors are virtually absent. Yet under the circumstances, flesh tones appear generally natural within the shadowy settings. Resolution is good during closeups but otherwise undistinguished during the darkest scenes. This is a visually scary experience that will put the audience on the edge of frighting uncomfortableness. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1-channel soundtrack is effectively dynamic sounding with a serious aggressive directionalized soundfield, with loud discrete surround energy that at times is panned around all channels. Voices and effects are heard in all directions. Atmospherics are creepy and sound effects are quite active, discrete and enhanced with powerful deep bass extending to 25 Hz and quite prominent as a sound element. The music score is creepy utilizing synthesizer sounds and disguised choral techniques to create unusual sounds. Dialogue is intelligible above the horrific mayhem with generally good spatial integration. This is an effectively crafted and exciting holosonic® soundtrack that will energized a dynamically capable home theatre system. (Gary Reber)
