"Poor Things" is the incredible tale about the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter. (Gary Reber)

The 1.66:1 1080p AVC picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photograph on 35mm Ektachrome film stock using the Arricam ST, Arricam LT, Arriflex 765 & Arriflex 416 Plus camera system and sourced from a 4K Digital Intermediate. Film grain is very fine such that it is virtually invisible.. The black-and-white scenes exhibit wonderful gray scale gradations with excellent contrast. The color scenes are wonderfully colorful with an aggressive vibrancy and hues that exhibit nuanced shadings. The color palette exhibits strong primaries and Alexandra is awash in orange hues that fill the screen. There are numerous warm and rich hues that are beautiful. Flesh tones are naturally hued. Contrast is excellent with deep black levels and revealing shadows. White levels are realistic. The cinematography of Robbie Ryan, BSC, ISC, an Academy Award nominee, is superb with his use of fisheye lenses and quasi-iris effects. Resolution is superb with fine detail exhibited in incredibly creative costumes and production design object textures. Facial features reveal fine lines, especially the stitched scar lines in DeVoes' face, pores, beard stubble, mustaches and hair. This is a beautifully vibrant colorful and black-and-white picture that is very filmic and artsy and risqué. (Gary Reber)
The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1-channel soundtrack is creatively dynamic sounding with numerous unusual sounds. Atmospherics are supported and realistic sounding over a wide range of scenes set in different locations with ubiquitously ambient environmental effects. Sound effects are realistic as well, and at times are enhanced with deep bass. Panning and directionalization enhance the dimensionality of sounds. The orchestral score is comprised of very creative sound elements and occupies a wide and deep soundstage with an extended and aggressive surround presence. Dialogue, which occasionally is in French, such as in the brothel scenes, is intelligible but often extremely forward sounding and boomy. This is dialogue focused soundtrack with creative atmospherics and sound effects, as well as music which makes for a captivating holosonic® experience. (Gary Reber)
