The 2.39:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 Ultra HD Dolby Vision/HDR10 picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed digitally in anamorphic Panavision® using the Arri Alexa LF and Arri Alexa Mini LF camera systems and sourced from a 4K master Digital Intermediate format. Color fidelity is excellent with rich and warm saturated hues, Hue shadings are nicely nuanced and natural, Earthy hues are prominent such as rich greens and browns and also rich reds. Flesh tones are perfectly natural. HDR contrast is superb with natural black levels and revealing shadow delineation. White levels are illuminating. The wide contrasts effectively enrich the color palette. Resolution is superb with fine textural visualization. Facial features are realistically detailed with skin pores, lines and hair. Costume features are nicely resolved as well as all manner of object texture. This is often a beautifully rendered picture with diverse and elaborate imagery. Reference quality. (Gary Reber)
The Dolby Atmos/Dolby TrueHD 7.1-channel soundtrack is dynamic sounding with diverse atmospherics and sound effects. All manner of unique sounds are prominent, which creates compelling envelopment. Deep bass provides excellent foundational effect and at times extends to sub-25 Hz frequencies. The orchestral/choral score occupies and wide and deep soundstage that extends to the surrounds with an aggressive presence. Foley sound effects are extensive and perfectly in sync with picture. Dialogue is intelligible with generally good spatial integration though ADR is an element that feels wanting spatially at times.
The Immersive Sound element is sans the orchestral/choral score but active with sporadic sound effects and atmospherics. There is one scene in which the evil sorceress raises an army of the undead, which contains effective disturbance sonics. However, unfortunately, much of the height layer is silent. So much more could have been achieved, including extending the music, to enhance the spherical dimensionality.
This is a fabulous holosonic® spherical surround soundtrack that is dynamic sounding with excellent fidelity. Reference quality. (Gary Reber)
