In "Flashdance," Alex (Jennifer Beals)—a fiercely determined 18-year-old with one all-consuming dream to study at the Pittsburgh Conservatory of Dance. Working during the day as a welder and at night as an exotic dancer, she bravely pursues her dream and undertakes an unforgettable journey that reveals the power of her convictions. (Gary Reber)

The 1.85:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 Ultra HD Dolby Vision/HDR10 picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed on film using the Arriflex 35 BL camera system and sourced from a 4K master Digital Intermediate format. Grain is extremely fine for a truly filmic look. The picture is wonderful with actual settings instead of sets, except for possibly Alex's furbished warehouse living quarters. The color palette is perfectly natural. Hues are warm and rich with realistic saturation. Flesh tones are perfectly natural throughout. The dance sequences are incredibly choreographed by Jeffrey Hornaday and are wonderful eye candy. HDR contrast is excellent with artistic lighting design, deep black levels and revealing shadows. Resolution is excellent with fine detail exhibited in facial features, makeup and hair, Clothing and costumes are finely resolved and all manner of object texture. This is a wonderful filmic and colorful picture. (Gary Reber)

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1-channel soundtrack is both dance, music, and dialogue driven. The music/dance sequences are exciting and captivating. Dialogue is intelligible throughout with excellent spatial integration. The music is wonderful and extends aggressively to envelop the soundstage. Surround energy is effectively aggressive. Mawbys dance club ambiance and surround envelopment feels enveloping. Deep bass sounds natural and supportive of the music's dynamics. This is a terrific holosonic® soundtrack, that while a bit dated, its fidelity sounds amazing.
