The 2,35:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 Ultra HD picture, reviewed on a Sony Bravia Z9D 4K Ultra HD HDR display, was photographed on Eastman film stock in anamorphic Panavision® using the Arriflex 35-III, Panavision Panaflex Gold II, Panavision Panaflex Lightweight and Panavision Panaflex Platinum camera system and sourced from a new 4K master Digital Intermediate format. The restored picture is clean and filmic with virtually no noticeable film grain. The imagery is natural throughout with well balanced hues. At times, colors pop. Flesh tones are perfectly natural. The wider color gamut reveals fine hue nuances. HDR contrast is generally good. Black levels are natural and shadows are generally revealing. White levels are realistic. Resolution generally is good , especially during closeups, but often a bit soft. Facial feature closeups reveal fine detail, This is an engaging flow of imagery that Tarantino has crafted. A classic. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1-channel soundtrack is dated but effective and entertaining. Atmospherics are abundant throughout and enhance the realism of the urban settings. Sound effects also are effective and at times quite loud, such as gun shots and car crashes, Foley sound effects sound realistic. Dialogue often sounds forward and wanting in spatial integration. The music is varied and often very effective. Surround envelopment is often strongly energized with atmospherics, sound effects and the music. This is a classic violent Tarantino escapade with an entertaining holosoonic® soundtrack. (Gary Reber)
