The 2.39:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 Ultra HD Dolby Vision/HDR10 picture, reviewed on a Sony Bravia Z9D 4K Ultra HD HDR display, was photographed digitally using the Arri Alexa 65 and| Arri Alexa Mini LF camera systems and sourced from a 4K master Digital Intermediate format. A 3D Conversion was performed by Double Negative but no 3D Blu-ray Disc was provided for review. The picture exhibits excellent resolution with fine detail revealed throughout. Color fidelity is naturally rendered with saturated hues and natural fleshtones. HDR contrast is dynamic with strong black levels, revealing shadows and bight highlights. The imagery is characteristic of other Marvel movies with a cartoonish flavor to the presentation. This is certain to please fans of the comic. (Gary Reber)
The Dolby Atmos/Dolby TrueHD 7.1-channel soundtrack is action-packed, loud and extremely active with diverse sound effects enhanced with extremely deep bass extension to sub-25 Hz. Foley sound effects are quite active and perfectly in sync with the picture. Atmospherics are realistic. The orchestral score is sweeping and occupies a wide and deep soundstage that extends to the surrounds. The sound effects project throughout the soundfield with an aggressive presence and are directionalized amongst the channel. Dialogue is intelligible throughout.
The Immersive Sound element is disappointing in that there is virtually no height layer sonics except for a brief dialogue sequences as Cassidy is to be executed, a beeping sound, thunder with music during the church wedding scene, a snippet of Carnage mouthing-off, more thunder and rain, a helicopter overhead and birds tweaking. Far more could have been achieved with so much missing that could have been a terrific height-layer experience,
This is an exciting holosonic® ear-level soundtrack that is dynamic and bass aggressive that will thrill fans. (Gary Reber)
