In "Upgrade," after his wife is killed during a brutal mugging that also leaves him paralyzed, Grey Trace (Marshall-Green) is approached by a billionaire inventor with an experimental cure that will "upgrade" his body. The cure––an Artificial Intelligence implant called STEM––gives Grey physical abilities beyond anything experienced, and the ability to relentlessly claim vengeance against those who murdered his wife and left him for dead. The 2.39:1 1080p AVC picture, reviewed on a Sony Bravia Z9D 4K Ultra HD HDR display, upconverted to 2160p with greater resolution and luminance, was photographed digitally in Panavision® using the Alexa Mini and Arri Alexa XT camera systems and sourced from a 2K master Digital Intermediate format. This is an extraordinarily stylized movie with powerfully distinct imagery to tell an extraordinary and original story related to Artificial Intelligence (AI). Because of the stylization, the color palette exhibits dark hues, but lighting effects enhance the stylization and hues. This impacts fleshtones, which are varied throughout dependent on lighting. But everything organically works. Contrast is excellent with deep black levels, revealing shadow delineation, and accentuated bright levels.Resolution is excellent with fine detail exhibited in facial features, hair, beards, clothing and textures. This is a real visually arresting experience with a very creative production design. This is one to own and share the experience. (Gary Reber)

The DTS-HD Master Audio™ 5.1-channel soundtrack is well crafted with a dynamic presence. Scenes are often powered with an in-head voice that occupies the entire soundfield. Deep bass is prevalent throughout, especially riveting in the action scenes. Sub-25 Hz is not uncommon. The road race with Gray in a roster and a police officer in another is immensely exciting, powered by an intense synthizer-score pronounced with deep bass. Other electronic sound effects accompanied by powerful bass are extensive. Dialogue is cleverly and effectively engaging, both naturally as a natural spatially integrated element and the reverberated treatment, and of course, the voice-in-the-head surrounding effect. The electronic score occupies the entire soundfield with a very aggressive surround presence. Sound effects and atmospherics are surround impactful with an aggressive directional experience. This is an exciting and adrenalinum-packed holosonic® soundfiedl that fully engages every channel. When Auro-Matic is engaged the WOW! factor explodes with incredibly strong Immersive Sound engagement that is incredibly thrilling. This is definitely one rare reference-quality soundtrack. Sound designers P.K. Hooker and Will Files deserve recognition for such a compelling sonic experience. (Gary Reber)
