Leatherface

The origins of the infamous "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" are finally revealed in "Leatherface." In Texas, years before the events of the "Texas Chain Saw Massacre," in the early days of the infamous Sawyer family, the youngest child is sentenced to a mental hospital after a suspicious incident leaves the sheriff's daughter dead. Ten years later, he kidnaps a young nurse and escapes with three other inmates. Pursued by authorities, including the deranged sheriff out to avenge his daughter's death, the Sawyer teen goes on a violent road trip from hell, molding him into the monster now known as Leatherface. Special features include the featurette "Behind The Bloody Mask: Making Leatherface" (HD 13:24), six deleted scenes (HD 21:04), upfront previews, and an UltraViolet digital copy.

The 2.39:1 1080p AVC picture, reviewed on a Sony Bravia Z9D 4K Ultra HD HDR display, upconverted to 2160p with greater resolution and luminance, was photographed digitally and sourced from a 2K master Digital Intermediate format. The movie opens in 1995 Texas with a color scheme that exhibits a golden hue. Ten years later, the color palette exhibits a more natural appearance with rich and warm hues. Bloody reds are realistic. The Sawyer's rural setting is earthy in hue with the same golden filter but to a lesser degree. The stylization effects of the fleshtone hues feature a slightly brownish red hue. Contrast is generally well balanced. Shadow delineation is wanting in some scenes, but black levels are deep and solid. At, at times, contrast is excellent as is production design. Resolution is excellent with fine detail exhibited in facial features, skin pores, hair, clothing, and object texture. The detail really reveals the gruesome killings. This is a really gruesome visual experience that is well photographed. (Gary Reber)

The DTS-HD Master Audio™ 5.1-channel soundtrack is quite dynamic. Near the beginning is a breakout from the mental hospital, which delivers a high-energy aggressive surround presence, with deep bass enhancement from the .1 LFE channel and a powerful orchestral track. Throughout surround envelopment is aggressive and effectively expands the immersive quality of the soundfield. Sound effects are powerful with intense transient impact, such as the sound of the chainsaw, which enhances the emotional reaction of the killings. Atmospherics are realistic throughout. The orchestral score is well recorded and dynamic sounding with a wide and deep soundstage that extends aggressively to the surrounds, which delivers an effective holosonic® presence. The score also delivers deep bass response. Throughout, dialogue is intelligible with good spatial integration. This is a well-produced dynamic soundtrack that delivers a chilling experience.
