    Patriots Day is based upon the dramatic real-life manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombers. This powerful action-thriller follows Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Wahlberg) as he joins brave survivors, first responders, and investigators in a race against time to find the bombers before they strike again. Also available as a 4K Ultra HD version.

    The 2.39:1 1080p AVC picture exhibits a tense realism, first through coverage of the Marathon and then more dramatically as the investigation proceeds. The color palette is natural throughout with well-balanced hues and accurate fleshtones. Contrast is decent, with deep blacks and decent shadow delineation, which is evident during the night scenes. The shoot-out scene is at night with effective street lighting that provides highlights to discern shadow detail. The production and action is quite effective in producing emotional impact. Resolution is excellent, with fine detail apparent in facial features, hair, uniforms and clothing, and objects such as vehicles and police paraphernalia. Overall, this is an effectively dramatic visual experience. (Gary Reber)

    The DTS:X/DTS-HD Master Audio™ 7.1-channel soundtrack is true to the visual realism and is quite dynamic during the chase and shoot-out scene. Of course, gunfire and explosions sound perfectly real and deliver strong SPL, enhanced with .1 LFE bass extension. Such sound effects energize all four surrounds with directionality. Atmospherics are sonically descriptive of the various scenes. The music score is nicely complementary, with a wide and deep soundstage presence that extends to he surrounds. Height surrounds have limited impact that at times are perceptible. Overall, this is a soundtrack that delivers a good sense of realism and at times effective holosonic® envelopment. (Gary Reber)

    I'm a fairly avid home theatre enthusiast and like to keep up on all of the most recent development and progress relating to A/V equipment and digital media. Of all of the publications related to this topic, WSR is the most complete, most thorough, and has become the champion of enthusiasts, such as myself, in fighting for the best possible presentation of audio and video in consumer electronics and broadcast media. In addition to the very informative columns, I am very appreciative of WSR's equipment reviews and its commitment to providing a relatively honest opinion of each product. It's refreshing to see a review that does not conclude with: If you like red LED displays, don't mind just slightly bright and forward sounding gear, and absolutely have to have to have your equipment in a gold-tone color, you should go to your nearest XYZ dealer and give an audition. It’s reviews like this that leave me mystified as to why people even bother reading these other publications. I hope that WSR continues its excellent work.
