In Dirty Grandpa, uptight Jason (Efron) is a week away from marrying his boss’s daughter. But everything changes when Jason’s fooled into driving his foul-mouthed, free-living grandpa (De Niro) to Daytona, Florida for spring break—and thrown into a series of frat parties, bar fights, and epic misdeeds on a road trip that gives new meaning to family bonding. The 2.39:1 1080p AVC picture was photographed digitally using the Arri Alexa XT Plus camera system. The color palette is nicely saturated throughout with vibrant hues that at times really pop. Fleshtones are perfectly natural throughout. Resolution is excellent, with fine detail apparent in fleshtones, hair, clothing, and object texture. Contrast also is excellent, with solid blacks and revealing shadow detail. This is a bright and vibrant picture with saturated colors that enhance the visual impact. (Gary Reber)
The DTS-HD Master Audio™ 5.1-channel soundtrack is vibrant and dynamic sounding during the party and club scenes, with a solid bass beat. Other times it is more subtle. In either case, fidelity is excellent. Atmospherics and sound effects are effectively spatial and at times are energized to support the more active scenes. Surround energy is at times aggressive with directionalized envelopment. Dialogue is consistently intelligible. Overall, this is a nicely energized soundtrack, but be prepared for quite a “dirty” affair. (Gary Reber)
