In Jupiter Ascending, Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along––her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos. (Gary Reber)

Special features include seven featurettes: Jupiter Jones: Destiny Is Within Us (HD 06:56), Jupiter Ascending: Genetically Spliced (HD 10:25), Caine Wise: Interplanetary Warrior (HD 05:18), The Wachowskis: Minds Over Matter (HD 07:25), Worlds Within Worlds Within Worlds (HD 09:36), Bullet Time Evolved (HD 09:35), and From Earth To Jupiter (And Everywhere In Between) (HD 09:34); and an UltraViolet digital copy.

The 2.40:1 1080 MVC 3D picture conversion was performed by Legend 3D with supervision by Jared Sandrew. The 3D is stunning. The color palette is rich in blue, red, purple, and gold hues. Fleshtones are naturally rendered. Contrast is well balanced, often with deep blacks, but at times muted. Shadow delineation is revealing throughout. Resolution is excellent with fine detail exhibited in foreground and background settings, as well as in close-ups of facial features, hair, clothing and object texture. The 3D experience takes advantage of the intricate set designs and exhibits excellent depth and perspective. Planetary systems, alien vistas, cityscapes, space cruisers, and other large-scale elements are rendered beautifully with convincing depth and volume. Even the actors and other foreground objects are defined with depth against the CG backdrops and intricate sets. No crosstalk ghosting was observed. Overall, this is yet another conversion that sets a reference standard for enjoying a 3D experience. Fans should be thrilled. (Gary Reber)

The Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1) soundtrack is truly dynamic sounding with energized .1 LFE engagement to heighten the visualizations, such as thunderous engine propulsion, explosions, and other sound effects that create the excitement. The surround soundfield is fully activated in all four channels, as well as height effects, ambiance, and other acoustic subtleties, all with impressive directionality. Such is effective during battles, spaceship maneuvers, collapsing wormholes, and overall mayhem. Dart fighters dive along skyscrapers and shoot through city streets, riddling buildings with cannon fire. There is so much action that the spatially dimensional soundfield is always exciting. Through it all, dialogue retains a clear, intelligible, and spatially integrated character. The music score is expansive, dynamic, and fully supporting of the storytelling. The music occupies a wide and deep soundstage that expands aggressively to the surrounds. Overall, this is an exciting and engaging holosonic® soundtrack that won’t disappoint. (Gary Reber)
