Chosen by Quentin Tarantino to inaugurate his Rolling Thunder distribution label, "Chungking Express" is a magical mystery tour through the most cosmopolitan city on Earth. Shifting wildly from manic noir to absurdist comedy, the film tells parallel stories of two Hong Kong cops who are dumped by their girlfriends, against the backdrop of a busy downtown take-out snack bar, The Midnight Express, where an ethereal pixie waitress named Faye (Wong) works. The film is a breathless, dazzling and ecstatic introduction to the Hong Kong New Wave movement. Tarantino's enthusiastic love of unconventional and undiscovered cinematic treasures, with the help of Miramax and The Voyager Company, inspired Rolling Thunder Pictures. Director Wong Kar-Wai's vision is highly stylized and visually arresting. (Gary Reber)
