Story Synopsis:
In 1884, the fanatical Muslim leader Muhammad Ahmad (Olivier) faces off against General Charles George Gordon (Heston) in the Sudanese city of Khartoum. There, Gordon learns that Ahmad intends to conquer other cities to establish a vast empire under his leadership. Convinced that war is inevitable, Gordon prepares the Egyptian troops under his command for an epic battle to defend the ancient city. There are no supplements, though this version does include the original roadshow engagement intermission and overture. (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced DVD exhibits a picture that is generally sharp, but fine details are minimal and edges appear slightly blurred. Color fidelity varies from somewhat washed-out to generally natural. Overall, the picture lacks clarity and natural openness. Source element artifacts, dirt, and scratches are plentiful, but the appearance of film grain is minimal. A slight halo of edge enhancement is detected, and pixelization often causes a breakup of fine visual detail. The DVD is framed in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, cropped from the 2.76:1 Ultra Panavision original. (Suzanne Hodges)
