With maestro Claudio Abbado at the controls, Gala From Berlin is a celebration of Giuseppe Verdi operas, 100 years after his death. The Italian composer is noted for masterpieces Falstaff, La Traviata, and Un Ballo In Maschera. While these operas are not staged, featured music is respectfully performed. For Giuseppe Verdi,
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 DVD exhibits a very nicely rendered performance. Images are sharp and detailed on the close-up shots of the performers and conductor, while shots of the stage appear somewhat blurred. Colors are rich and vibrant, with nicely balanced fleshtones and deep, solid blacks. Pixelization is noticed occasionally. While there is a slight amount of edge enhancement detected, the overall quality of the picture is quite pleasing. (Suzanne Hodges)
