DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD exhibits subtle improvements when compared to the previously released, non-anamorphic DVD (Issue 27). Images are slightly sharper with finer details, and contrast is much more balanced. Colors have a warmer, more natural appearance, compared to the faded hues on the previous DVD. Viewed alone, the picture appears dated, with slightly soft images, but generally good detail. Pixelization can be a problem, but there is no bothersome edge enhancement. Dirt, artifacts, and film grain are revealed from the source element. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The remastered multichannel soundtracks both sound nicely restored with a quite pleasing sense of dimensionality, given that the source for the repurposing was the original mono audio. Background hiss and hum can be noticed throughout, but should not be too distracting. It should noted that there is a consistently spurious noise floor in the surrounds. Often, the audio is focused toward center channel mono, but also with subtle to moderate and even heightened instances of spatial expansion and envelopment. The music has a rather welcome, fairly holosonic presence that sounds expansive and prominently fills the surrounds, especially during heightened moments.
