Story Synopsis:
Winner of four Academy Awards

DVD Picture:
The non-anamorphic 1.58:1 DVD exhibits a slightly smoother picture than the previously issued non-anamorphic DVD. The softer look is an improvement to the hard-edged, edge-enhanced picture on the previous disc. Viewed alone, the picture should satisfy, with generally detailed images, despite appearing slightly soft. Colors are rich and well balanced, with nicely rendered fleshtones, and generally deep blacks. The picture seems slightly cleaner than the previous version, with only occasionally noticed pixelization. Source element artifacts are not bothersome. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack is a new remastering effort which should be quite satisfying and pleasing, while at the same time remaining reasonably true to the original sound. The primary element of the new soundtrack is the incorporation of the re-purposed multichannel score, which provides for a nicely engaging presence, along with subtle surround envelopment. The soundstage for effects is typically mono, but there are moments for which the audio is spread beyond, such as in Chapter 12, in a relatively prominent manner, and more subtly in numerous other instances. Deep bass is inherently restrained, and the incorporation of.1 LFE activity is very sparse. The original audio has been nicely restored, with reasonably low background noise. (Perry Sun)
