Filmed at the famed New York Metropolitan Opera House, Semiramide stars June Anderson in the title role of Rossini
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 DVD picture delivers a stage performance of excellent quality. Images are sharp and finely detailed into the delicate beading on elaborate costumes. Colors are rich, with deep reds, bold golds and endless blacks. Shots of the full stage seem slightly smeared, a likely result of the stage lighting, and definition is a bit wanting into the background. Still, with such dark backgrounds, the powerful costumes really stand out. There is no distracting edge enhancement or pixelization for a pleasing performance throughout. (Suzanne Hodges)
