Debuting in Dresden, Germany in 1911, Der Rosenkavalier (The Cavalier Of The Rose) is one of Richard Strauss
The video-originated 1.78:1 DVD is not anamorphically enhanced, so details in the costumes often shimmer, and all but the closest shots of the actors appear blurred. Shots of the full stage are undefined. Colors are nicely balanced and occasionally rich. Edge enhancement is apparent, and as with most cases, distracts more than it enhances anything. Overall, this DVD is a disappointment. (Suzanne Hodges)
