    Story Synopsis:
    Aging Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Harris) knows that his life is drawing to a close, and makes the decision to name his powerful and trusted general Maximus (Crowe) as his successor to rule the empire

    The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD exhibits stunning quality, with scenes shot with different stylized qualities. Some scenes are cold with monochromatic, harshly contrasted gradients of blues to pure blacks. Other scenes utilize rich golds for a warmer appearance. Contrast and shadow dilineation are nicely rendered, with excellent visula information in the darker scenes. Throughout the color scheme, hues are nicely balanced.     I read WSR for the articles—honest. Terry Paullin's industry insight is refreshing and lively. The lack of comparisons of which home theatre-in-a-box is best or which sub $200 DVD player is best leaves more room for in-depth product and movie reviews. Most importantly, though, I read WSR for the caricature of Gary Reber morphed on to the movie featured on the cover in the Editor's Couch page. Pierce Brosnan had better watch out!
