  WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Now living in a hillside stronghold after the Spanish Civil War, young and imaginative Ofelia (Baquero) stumbles upon a long-forgotten stone labyrinth and meets Pan (Jones), a magical faun. He convinces her that she is a lost princess of the underworld, and in order for her to return, she must complete three tasks. Determined to reclaim her kingdom, she is unaware of the immediate danger that threatens her bedridden mother (Gil) and yet-to-be-born brother. Pan

DVD Picture:
With its golden color scheme, the anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 DVD does not have the most accurate fleshtones, obviously a conscious decision by the filmmakers. Blacks are deep, and shadow delineation is good, making for a dimensional image. Details are captured well, and the image is generally void of any compression artifacts. Heavy film grain is noticeable throughout the presentation, and subtle stair-stepping artifacts can be noticed at times. Edge enhancement, while minor, can also be noticed. (Danny Richelieu)
