Story Synopsis:
Produced in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the death of Shozo Makino, the father of Japanese Cinema, Ronin Gai is a gruesome story set in the 1830s near the end of the samurai era. Based on a story by Itaro Yamagami. (Tricia Spears)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 DVD picture has a dated appearance. The color scheme can appear nicely balanced at times, though fleshtones can seem brownish, and blacks lack true depth and appear milky. Sharpness is adequate, though throughout much of the picture finer details and textures are lacking. The source element is quite clean, with only a few artifacts noticed. Though dated, the visual experience is not terribly bothersome. (Suzanne Hodges)
