Story Synopsis:
In an incredible performance, Kevin Spacey (who knew this guy could sing?!) stars as the adult Bobby Darin (William Ullrich is the young Bobby) in "Beyond The Sea." While filming the story of his life, Bobby takes a look back on where it all began, starting from his diagnosis of rheumatic fever to his love of music. With encouragement from whom he believed to be his mother (Blethyn), Bobby would not give up his dream and went on to be a star. But the young Bobby keeps the older Bobby in line and makes him remember things as they truly were. (Tricia Spears)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced DVD picture exhibits stylized imagery that is complementary to the storytelling. Colors are often awash in a veil of blues or greens that affect blacks, whites, and fleshtones; but other times the color palette is naturally balanced. Blacks often lack true depth. There are interesting and creative transfers between color and black and white, with a gray scale that is nicely contrasted (at times with a hint of color). The picture exhibits satisfying sharpness and detail, but sometimes it appears soft or slightly smeared. Edge enhancement is occasionally noticed and there is also some pixelization. Overall, this is a stylized visual experience that is often pleasing. (Suzanne Hodges)
