DVD Picture:
The black-and-white picture is presented on this 1.85:1 DVD in anamorphic widescreen, with a gray scale that is well balanced. Contrast is nicely rendered with deep blacks and bright whites, with a satisfying gradation of visual information between the two extremes. Images can be nicely detailed at times, though there is mostly an inherent softness. Problems in the source element include some film grain and dirt, as well as minor brightness flickering. There is no obtrusive edge enhancement, but pixel breakup, loss of details, and smearing can be noticed. (Suzanne Hodges)
