Story Synopsis:
Based on the true story of his father's struggles as a filmmaker, Mario Van Peebles directs a revealing portrait of Melvin Van Peebles. After the success of his debut feature Watermelon Man, Melvin Van Peebles (played by Mario) was determined to push the Hollywood boundaries with the controversial Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song. Despite the fact that only two theatres would initially play the film, Sweetback eventually became the top-grossing independent hit of 1971. (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 DVD picture exhibits stylish visuals, with a vibrant color scheme and archival footage peppered throughout. The color palette exhibits rich and warm reds, rich blues, and deep blacks. Some segments appear coolly contrasted to the warm color palette of other segments. Images are sharp and detailed, sometimes appearing exceptionally textured. Minor smearing is occasionally evident, with a slight loss of finer details. Other distractions come in the way of edge enhancement, as well as some pixel breakup. (Suzanne Hodges)
